What is ChatGPT?

That is what you’re all here for after all. According to a statement from OpenAI, we’ve trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way with the dialogue format which makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.

ChatGPT is the third update to OpenAI’s generative pre-training idea which allows users to communicate with robots with seemingly natural dialogue but its uses don’t stop there.

It corrects grammar, summarizes difficult text into simple concepts, converts movies into emojis and it fixes bugs in Python code. The creators opened up Chat GPT for beta testing in November 2021 through the playground, and they are supposed to launch an improved version of GPT3 this year.

To avoid providing any harmful outputs, they trained the software using massive amounts of text data from various sources through AI and machine learning.

The training used reinforcement learning from human feedback. The Times newspaper in the UK describes Chat GPT as a stunning life-like conversational language system and described it as the world’s first truly useful chatbot.

This all seems a bit too good to be true and maybe it is that we have to think about not only the limitations of the technology but also the challenges and threats that it poses to society.

The first immediate consequence of chat GPT was that its own website had Frozen due to massive demand.

With more than a million people signing up to use the software in just five days it is quite incredible forcing OpenAI to scale their systems quickly. Chat GPT’s knowledge base is limited and mostly linked to 2021 because it is still in its early stages of development.

This renders some questions useless when Elon Musk found out that OpenAI was accessing Twitter’s database to train Chat GPT, he paused the access because OpenAI is no longer a non-profit and open source therefore they should pay for this information.

Who came up with the idea of Chat GPT?

The founder of the chatbot is the company OpenAI, the founders are Illya Sutkever, Greg Brockman, Wojciech Zaremba, Elon Musk, John Schulman, and finally the CEO, Sam Altman. We do not know specifically who originally came up with the idea of the chatbot within their team.

When was Chat GPT created?

The company, founded on December 11, 2015, began its venture with private investors including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and PayPal founder Peter Theil 7 years ago.

The famous star team of investors & a total of 9 researchers who either graduated from the top of their class or plucked from other companies, would compose the core team.

Enough about the company, the chatbot was initially launched on 30 November 2022 and within 5 days it managed to reach more than 1 million users which even froze their site.

After some updates in their backend, they were up and running again in some days.

What makes it different from other chatbots?

Chat GPT was trained to mimic writing styles, avoid certain types of conversations and learn from the multiple questions. It is one of the largest AI models in the world with a humongous amount of information which is why it can answer almost most of the questions asked. It only contains knowledge of the events till 2021 thus giving it a tiny pause.

Chat GPT & Ethics

In the future, as you might expect there are some ethical implications that come with this type of chatbot, particularly around new videos that have surfaced where coders can use it to write their code and school kids can use it to answer their exam questions.

Gone are the days of homework & exams and long times to just find codes to copy & paste from stack overflow.

Though cheating in exams is for kids a lot of hackers have been trying to exploit the chatbot. Cybernews and their research team used the chatbot to figure out some of the weaknesses that a website contains.

After giving them some time and somewhat of an idea of what type of website it was in 45 minutes the chatbot provided them the code which they should concentrate on.

They didn’t end up hacking it but the bot gave enough keywords & ideas for any regular ethical hacker to obtain permission. It even provided a warning with the content stating “that executing malicious commands on a server can cause serious damage”.

Still providing the information.

OpenAI’s team stated that “We’re using the Moderation API to warn or block certain types of unsafe content, but we expect it to have some false negatives and positives for now. We’re eager to collect user feedback to aid our ongoing work to improve this system”

Conclusion

Even with the whats’ and whos’ of Chat GPT, there are multiple questions that still remain unanswered like whether is it going to remain free in the future, whether will it be safe, will rule over the internet in the future.

Even the experts are unsure what to comment on for those queries. But if they ever do get answered stay tuned with us for the updates.

Chat GPT is already working on its next big update for its users maybe they will charge money, and perhaps they might now.
